Group activities have proved successful in time banks globally, as they bring people together quicker, breaking down barriers that sometimes get in the way of an initial person-to-person swap.
We started Groups from early 2016 and now there are several special interest groups in Portobello Timebank. Members are free to join as many Groups as they wish. Being a group member means you will be included in all communications, so you can choose whether you want to participate.
There are two groups types:
You received time credit for participating in these groups. There are three ‘community’ groups which are funded by the ‘Community’ account (generally capped at no more that 4 hours per month per member).
- Community Gardening
- Litter Clearance
There are also earning groups, where you are paid for your time by the person receiving the service.
These are groups, where participants pay for the time they attend. The event organiser receives the time of the event plus any set-up time, which usually means there is a surplus which is paid back into the ‘Community’ account.
- Art Appreciation
- Cooking & Preserves
- Supper Club
- Life Circle
- Written Word
Any member is free to join (and leave) any group, with the click of a mouse. Anyone in the group can send email to all other group members, though this is normally left to the group organisers.
